Advanced Multicultural Counseling: Skills & Application

PREREQUISITE: Recommended but not required: Master’s Level Multicultural Counseling Course

This advanced course builds upon foundational multicultural counseling principles to strengthen students’ cultural competencies in counseling practice. Students will critically examine their own cultural identities and biases while learning advanced strategies for working effectively with clients from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, and ability backgrounds. The course emphasizes case conceptualization, culturally responsive interventions, and systems-level advocacy. Students will also explore ethical dilemmas, research-informed practices, and the role of counselors as change agents in promoting equity and inclusion.

UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE COMPETENT IN:

  • Applying advanced multicultural counseling and guidance theories, models, and frameworks to guide culturally responsive practice.
  • Developing and presenting complex case conceptualizations that integrate diverse perspectives, intersectionality, and systems-level influences.
  • Designing and implementing evidence-based counseling interventions tailored to the unique needs of clients from diverse gender and sexual orientation backgrounds.
  • Demonstrating advanced skills in advocating for marginalized individuals and communities within schools, educational facilities, and other learning environments.
  • Demonstrating competence in providing counseling services across diverse settings, including community agencies and private practice, with sensitivity to cultural and systemic dynamics.
  • Reflecting on counselors’ personal cultural identity, privilege, and biases, and articulate their impact on counseling practice.
  • Analyzing how culture, race, and ethnicity intersect with family identities and experiences, applying the appropriate framework to case conceptualization.
  • Applying culturally congruent counseling skills and interventions across diverse client populations, guided by the Multidimensional Model of Cultural Competence (MDCC).
  • Integrating multicultural theories, client worldviews, systemic barriers, and cultural strengths into advanced case conceptualizations.
  • Demonstrating advocacy skills at micro (individual), meso (community), and macro (policy/system) levels, consistent with emphasis on counselors as community advocates.
  • Applying professional ethical codes (ACA, APA) to complex multicultural counseling dilemmas, considering cultural values and power dynamics.
  • Evaluating multicultural counseling research, assessment tools, and evidence-based practices for cultural validity and applicability.
  • Demonstrating commitment to ongoing multicultural competence through reflective practice, feedback, and lifelong learning.
  • Demonstrating how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to research, analyze, and synthesize information in the Multicultural Counseling field of practice.
  • Demonstrating and integrating culturally appropriate communication skills and techniques.
