Amberton University offers several programs leading to professional licensure or certification within the State of Texas. States vary in what professions they require to be licensed and how licensure is acquired. Some states require an individual to graduate from an accredited program. Others require individuals to obtain additional coursework, additional fieldwork, background checks, passage of additional state licensing exams, additional fees, or other requirements.
Accreditation Statement

State Authorization
Amberton University is a member of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA), which allows us to provide distance-learning programs and coursework to residents of states other than Texas. NC-SARA membership, however, does not grant reciprocity or exempt us from state professional licensing requirements. As a result, licensing requirements in Texas may not be recognized as sufficient to obtain a license in any other state.
Relocation
Should a student relocate during the course of a program to another state, it may impact the student’s ability to remain in the program, meet the state licensure requirements, and/or continue to receive financial aid funding. Prior to considering relocation, please contact the Amberton University Office of Administrative Services to discuss authorization and licensure eligibility requirements.
International Students
Prior to enrolling in any program at Amberton University, prospective students living and/or working outside of the United States should confirm with the appropriate certifying agency whether successful completion of any degree program at Amberton University will meet the credentialing requirements of the country in which they intend to seek employment, as to certain types of employment or for advanced/specialized educational programs.
Professional Licensure Requirements
The curriculum for programs leading to licensure at Amberton University have been designed to meet the academic requirements for licensure/certification in Texas as well as preparing students to apply for licensure exams in the State of Texas. The licensure boards in each state are responsible for establishing the requirements for licensure/certification for their state. Students who intend to return or move to any state other than Texas need to review the professional licensure disclosures pertaining to their program and consult with the state professional licensing board. The state professional licensing boards make the ultimate decision as to whether or not an individual will be eligible for licensure based on the rules and regulations in place at the time the individual submits their application for licensure. Accounting (BBA/MBA –Accounting dual degree)
Requirements for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license vary by state and involve more than successful degree completion. Candidates for licensure need to satisfy other requirements, including but not limited to completing an application, paying a fee, passing licensure exams, and work experience.
The BBA/MBA Accounting degree meets the education requirements of the Texas State Board of Accountancy necessary to register for the Certified Public Accountant examination. The 150-credit hour program requires students to complete a total of 45 hours of accounting courses in earning the BBA Accounting and MBA Accounting. The dual program can be completed through a combination of on-campus and online courses. Students who complete the Amberton University Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Master of Business Administration in Accounting meet the education requirements for becoming a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas. However, each student should carefully review the current state requirements of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy for changes and updates. The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy provides clear guidelines and requirements to take the CPA exam and in applying for a new licensure. It is the sole responsibility of each student to satisfy each of the requirements of the State of Texas, including any educational requirement. Master of Arts – Marriage and Family Therapy
The purpose of the Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy is to provide the graduate with a comprehensive knowledge of the functional areas of marriage and family counseling including but not limited to the nature of the counseling profession and an understanding of life span development, as well as cognitive knowledge of counseling theories, concepts and principles of concern to the counseling professional. The program can be completed through on-campus attendance as well as a mix of on-campus and online courses. It cannot be completed 100% online. Students who complete the Amberton University Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy meet the academic requirements for becoming Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Texas. Master of Arts – Clinical Mental Health Counseling (formerly Professional Counseling)
The Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is designed for persons interested in becoming Licensed Professional Counselors (L.P.C.) in the State of Texas. The degree prepares graduates to work with individuals, couples, families, and groups in community, social service, religious, and private practice settings. The curriculum is comprised of sixty (60) graduate hours and includes a minimum of 300 practicum hours. No student may enroll in a practicum course without completing all other degree requirements. Students who complete the program meet the academic requirements for becoming Licensed Professional Counselors (L.P.C.) in the State of Texas. The program can be completed through on-campus attendance as well as a mix of on-campus and online courses. It cannot be completed 100% online. Master of Arts – School Counseling
The Master of Arts in School Counseling prepares students to satisfy academic requirements for the Professional School Counseling Certification in the State of Texas. Admission to this program is available only to those students who satisfy the Program Admission Requirements. The program is comprised of 48 graduate hours and includes a minimum of 160 practicum hours. Students completing this degree and passing the TExES examination for School Counseling are eligible for employment as a school counselor in an educational setting. Graduates will be counselors, academic advisors, and advocates who create conditions of academic achievement for children in public and private schools. The program can be completed through on-campus attendance as well as a mix of on-campus and online courses. It cannot be completed 100% online.
