Human Growth & Development

PREREQUISITE:  None

The course investigates the changes that occur with age and the processes underlying human growth and development throughout the life cycle. The developmental progression of the family life cycle is also examined, encompassing physical, psychological, and social aspects. Emphasis is placed on areas such as sensory and perceptual ability, cognitive and language development, behavioral genetics, and effects of socialization agents. Developmental and learning theories will be emphasized.

UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE COMPETENT IN:

  • Analyzing and integrating major theories of human development across various life stages.
  • Understanding and interpreting cognitive, physical, and socioemotional changes from infancy to late adulthood.
  • Comprehending the role of genetics in shaping development throughout the lifespan.
  • Examining stages of the family life cycle, family structure, and their impact on resource allocation.
  • Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of attainment theory and its application through different life stages.
  • Describing and analyzing various theories of personality development across the lifespan.
  • Applying development theories specifically to the adolescent period.
  • Assessing the development of motor skills during early childhood years.
  • Analyzing theories addressing personality development in early and middle childhood.
  • Describing the transition from childhood self-concept to the beginning of identity formation in adolescence.
  • Comprehending theories related to cognitive and socioemotional development during adulthood.
  • Demonstrating analytical understanding of changes in family and peer relationships throughout the lifespan.
  • Describing and analyzing the formation and dynamics of adult relationships.
  • Synthesizing information on changes in health, sensory, abilities, and mental capabilities in late adulthood.
  • Evaluating theories on psychological stages during the dying process.

ACQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Interpret cognitive, physical, and socioemotional changes from infancy to late adulthood
  • Assess the development of motor skills during early childhood years
  • Synthesize information on changes in health, sensory abilities, and mental capabilities in late adulthood
