Doctoral Comprehensive Exam

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of 54 hours of required curriculum.

The comprehensive examination in the Professional Counseling Doctoral program is a summative assessment covering all completed coursework and core knowledge areas of the curriculum. The exam is designed to evaluate the student’s integrated understanding of professional counseling theory, research, ethics, and practice in preparation for advanced doctoral work.

Students must complete the Comprehensive Examination after completing all coursework, before being eligible to enroll in the Applied Doctoral Project I course. The Comprehensive Examination will be conducted orally by three members of the faculty and consists of eight (8) questions prepared by the Faculty Council.

Once students have successfully completed the Comprehensive Examination (pass/fail), they are eligible to enroll in the Applied Doctoral Project I course. Students must register & sign up for the Comprehensive Exam (0 credit hours) and pay the appropriate fee. The student must score 72% or above on the examination to achieve a passing grade.**

**A student will be allowed three attempts to take and pass the oral exam. If the oral  exam is not passed after the third attempt, the student must contact the Director of the doctoral program to discuss next steps.
