Counseling Ethics in Professional Practice

PREREQUISITE:  None

This advanced doctoral course explores the complex and evolving ethical landscape of counseling in today’s professional practice. Students will move beyond basic principles to examine ethical challenges through multiple lenses, preparing them to lead with integrity, cultural responsiveness, and professional courage. The course is structured around five interconnected pillars: Ethical Foundations & Advanced Decision-Making; Law, Regulation, and Risk Management; Cultural Humility, Equity and access; Technology, Telehealth, and Data/AI Ethics; and Supervision, Leadership, Organizational & Research Ethics.

Through case studies, debates, role plays, and applied projects, students will strengthen their ability to analyze, anticipate, and address ethical challenges at the highest professional level. By the end of the course, they will be equipped not only to practice ethically themselves but also to guide, teach, and mentor others in upholding the highest standards of the counseling profession.

UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE COMPETENT IN:

  • Applying advanced ethical decision-making models to complex and ambiguous counseling
  • Interpreting and integrating laws, regulations, and professional standards into counseling, supervision, and leadership practice.
  • Demonstrating cultural humility and ethical sensitivity when working with diverse populations and addressing issues of equity and justice.
  • Identifying and responding ethically to systemic bias, oppression, and barriers to care within schools, agencies, and communities.
  • Evaluating risk management strategies that protect both clients and practitioners, including duty to warn, confidentiality, and informed consent.
  • Analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas in supervision and mentoring of counselors-in-training.
  • Demonstrating ethical leadership in organizational settings, including policy development, advocacy, and team decision-making.
  • Applying ethical principles to research practices, including participant protections, data management, and dissemination of findings.
  • Navigating ethical challenges in technology and telehealth, including online counseling, record keeping, and digital security.
  • Critically evaluating the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in counseling, supervision, and research.
  • Modeling professional integrity and accountability, serving as an ethical role model for peers, supervisees, and colleagues.

ACQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Make confident, well-reasoned ethical decisions in complex and high-stakes counseling situations
  • Apply laws and regulations wisely while keeping client safety and well-being first
  • Practice with cultural humility and promote fairness, equity, and justice in counseling and leadership
  • Navigate technology and data issues ethically, including telehealth, digital records, and the use of AI
  • Lead with integrity by modeling ethical supervision, organizational leadership, and responsible research
