We All Need to Be Lifelong Learners

By Dr. Blair Y. Stephenson, Ph.D.
Lifelong Learner Blog – September 14, 2023

To survive and thrive in today’s modern careers, each of us must develop an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Like it or not, this is the new normal.

Let’s start with a simple definition of lifelong learning:
It’s the ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated pursuit of useful knowledge for personal and professional development.

How Many Careers Will You Have?

How many careers do you think you’ll have before retiring? (That is — if you ever retire!)

As a Baby Boomer, I’ve had eight or nine so far. As you read this, how many careers have you already had? And how many of you are embarking on an entirely new one, thanks to the degree you’re earning from Amberton University (or elsewhere)?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • The average American worker holds 12 jobs in a lifetime.
  • 37% of the U.S. labor force changed or lost their job in 2020.
  • Average job tenure is 4.1 years.
  • 65% of Americans are actively searching for a new full-time job.
  • The average age of a career change is 39.
  • 42% change jobs every one to two years.
  • 31% change jobs every four years or more.
  • 23% change jobs every three years.

The point? Career evolution is constant. And so is the need to adapt, adjust, and retool.

A Rapidly Changing World

Consider the last 50 years:

  • We didn’t have personal computers.
  • Mobile phones were the size of bricks.
  • Smartwatches were just for Dick Tracy.
  • Uber wasn’t even a thought 10 years ago.
  • And most of us hadn’t heard of ChatGPT just two years ago.

To succeed, we must commit ourselves to learning and re-learning throughout our lives.

Lifelong learning fuels personal growth, boosts career opportunities, and equips us to adapt in an ever-changing job market. Fortunately, the resources are abundant: online courses from reputable universities (like Amberton), TED Talks, podcasts, online articles, and more.

Explore Amberton University’s flexible online programs designed to support lifelong learners at every stage of their career.

The Rise of AI, Robotics, and New Industries

Let’s talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies:

  • AI is transforming academics, writing, coding, and research.
  • Robots cook fast food and defuse bombs.
  • DNA splicing and molecular biology are reshaping medicine.
  • Autonomous 18-wheelers are being tested in Dallas-Fort Worth.
  • Drones are delivering packages — and playing major roles in warfare.

The nature of human work is evolving fast — across every industry and job level, from line cook to CEO.

Don’t Forget “Power Skills”

Lifelong learning isn’t just about technical knowledge. In fact, soft skills — like communication, adaptability, and critical thinking — are now often referred to as power skills. These are the skills employers actively seek and value in today’s dynamic workforce.

Amberton offers courses that help build these critical soft skills — learn more about our adult education programs tailored for working professionals.

How to Practice Lifelong Learning Daily

Being a lifelong learner doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intention and planning — especially when life gets busy.

Here are a few practical tools:

  • Set aside dedicated time for learning.
  • Define meaningful goals.
  • Find mentors.
  • Network with other learners.

Final Thoughts

We are entering a future full of both promise and challenge. And I believe — with all my heart and solid evidence — that to survive and thrive, we all must become lifelong learners in both our personal and professional lives.
