The course CSL6825 covers the historical development and principal conceptualizations of marital and family therapy goals. Students will learn about the various therapeutic approaches currently utilized in the field and gain a comprehensive understanding of the key concepts and theories in marriage and family therapy.
Upon completion of CSL6825, students will be able to explain the history and development of the marriage and family therapy field, review relevant family laws, classify theoretical approaches, compare individual therapy with marriage and family therapy, and describe the nature of divorce, re-marriage, and blended families. Additionally, students will understand assessment instruments, the role of the therapist in different theories, the influence of each theory in the field, key terms and concepts, ethics for therapists, research on marital and family therapy, supervision processes, and the impact of gender, culture, and ethnicity in therapy.
